Using an anthropological lens we will study cross cultural ethnographic material from Amazonian tribes and the American Amish, via plastic surgery addicts in Brazilian favelas, to crack cocaine dealers in New York and Indian Dalits (untouchables) working in call centres.
What is culture?
What does it mean to be a person?
What does it mean to live in society?
How are we the same and yet different from each other?
Why does anthropology matter?
To what extent is it possible to know others?
Our first text is the fascinating In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio by Philippe Bourgois
This is a five-year study of Puerto Rican drug dealers, drug users, and local residents in New York’s East Harlem (or “El Barrio”). We learn about the interconnected social and economic factors that drive El Barrio’s youth into the drug trade: lack of opportunities, violence and racism. The study explores the identities of the residents and how they win respect through an anti-establishment street culture.

MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE (TIME &/OR SPACE)
Think about these questions - Why did you choose that talk? How does it link to the topic?
For movement you could watch ‘Learning from a barefoot movement’ by Bunker Roy or for the body you could look at ‘Your body language may shape who you are’ by social psychologist Amy Cuddy.
You could also watch any of these shows to broaden your knowledge about the world.
